Professional Development

Professional Development for Schools and Educators

The most important asset a school has is the teaching force. Good teachers make all the difference. But to meet the high standards of learning for every child that we strive for as a nation and as a society, even the best teachers need help. Providing effective professional development for teachers is one way that school administrators, parents, and communities can invest in their schools’ teachers.

Sudipta offers workshops that focus on the development of literacy, reading proficiency, and writing skills for students from preschool through high school.

What makes Professional Development effective?

Professional development should accomplish a number of things. It should broaden the participants’ knowledge of content, should be engaging, should take into account the complexities of teaching a large group of students at once, and should be aligned with the curriculum standards we ask our teachers to follow. But most of all, professional development needs to focus on the end goal of student achievement. Sudipta’s workshops are designed to not only connect theory, practice, and student outcomes, but also to give participants concrete standards-based strategies that can be implemented immediately.

Some examples of Sudipta’s Professional Development Workshops:

  1. The Picture Book as Mentor Text

  2. Picture books are a microcosm of good writing fundamentals and are an ideal and underutilized teaching tool. The best picture books provide snapshots of every element of literature that should be taught at all levels. As a mentor text, a picture book can model everything from economy of language to rich sensory imagery. This workshop presents strategies to use picture books to encourage student authors to create original fictional or nonfictional narrative works either individually or as student-collaboration projects.

  3. Educational RAD and WrAD Libs: A Different Approach to Comprehension and Creativity

  4. Reading and writing are two sides of the same coin. The better a student understands what he reads, the easier it becomes to write. This workshop presents a lesson plan that rapidly evaluates comprehension as well as creates an idea bank for creative writing assignments.

  5. What Comes Next? How Sequels can Inspire Writing

  6. Sometimes the hardest part of writing is getting started, but when we are teaching children to write we can remove this initial obstacle by letting them take inspiration from existing books. By forging forward with a character that the child already feels connected to, we heighten interest and remove writer’s block, making the sequel an ideal tool for teaching narrative writing.
